Are You Getting the Protection You Deserve?
When it comes to workplace safety, few things are more important than knowing your respirator actually protects you. I’ve been conducting respirator fit tests in the Fraser Valley and all over Metro Vancouver for over a decade, and I can say with confidence that not all fit tests are created equal.
Many workers I meet tell me their previous fit test took only 15 minutes. That might sound convenient, but I always ask: “Are you getting the protection needed and your money’s worth?”
WorkSafe BC Compliant Respirator Fit Testing * Comprehensive & Thorough
Respirator Mask Fit Testing, or just Respirator Fit Testing is one of FreeBird Safety’s proficient services. Mandated by Worksafe BC Reg 8.40, our mobile service will come to and your crew, even on a Sunday, From Metro Vancouver out to the Fraser Valley BC If you need to donn (wear) an N95 respirator or a half face respirator due to a hazardous substance present, a fit test must be conducted.
We aim to achieving a face to mask seal, with no gaps between the respirator facepiece and your skin. In addition to this, a comprehensive & thorough safety narrative will be delivered to all workers. Loaded with information, the instructional delivered is more in-depth then what's being delivered by other fit testers.
CSA Compliant Respirator Fit Tests – What Proper Testing Really Looks Like
Under the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) Standard Z94.4-02, titled “Selection, Use, and Care of Respirators,” a proper fit test involves much more than putting on a mask and doing a few breathing exercises.
A complete CSA respirator fit test should take around 30 to 45 minutes, covering several critical steps:
- How to choose the right respirator for your job.
- How to inspect the mask for cracks, damage, or worn parts.
- How to disassemble, clean, and reassemble the respirator properly.
- How to store it safely to maintain performance and hygiene.
Just the demonstration of cleaning, inspection, and reassembly takes about 15 minutes by itself — so if your test only takes that long in total, you’re not getting the full instruction or protection you deserve.
Proudly Serving the Fraser Valley from Abbotsford, BC
My primary office is based in Abbotsford, BC, right in the heart of the Fraser Valley. Most of my clients are located from Surrey to Chilliwack, as well as across the river in Coquitlam, Maple Ridge, and Mission.
While I often work in Vancouver and Whistler by request, my main focus has always been supporting the hardworking people who build, repair, and protect our communities here in the Valley.
That local focus means faster service, flexible scheduling, and a professional who understands the specific safety challenges faced by industries in this region — from construction and manufacturing to healthcare and emergency response.
Construction Respirator Fit Testing – Getting Safety Right on the Job
In construction and the trades, workers face constant exposure to dust, fumes, and airborne particles. A proper construction respirator fit testing session ensures that every worker not only has a respirator that seals properly but also knows how to use it safely and confidently.
I often hear from new clients that before training with me, they didn’t realize how easily a seal can be broken — by facial hair, damaged straps, or even how the mask is worn. Once they’ve gone through proper training, they walk away confident that their equipment is protecting them as intended under CSA standards and WorkSafeBC Regulation 8.40(1), which states:
“A respirator which requires an effective seal with the face for proper functioning must not be issued to a worker unless a fit test demonstrates that the facepiece forms an effective seal with the wearer’s face.”
This regulation isn’t just a box to check — it’s a legal requirement designed to protect the health and safety of every worker in British Columbia.
Fit Testing for Medical Students – A Smart, Safe, and Time-Saving Solution
Another growing part of my work is providing Fit Testing for Medical Students enrolled in programs that lead to work in healthcare, emergency response, or any field where respirators are required.
If you’re an instructor or program coordinator for nursing, dental hygiene, practical nursing, health care assistant, or emergency responder training, having me come to your school or training site to test the entire class at once offers big advantages:
- Time-saving: I can test an entire class in one session instead of one student at a time.
- Consistency: Every student receives the same thorough training and hands-on demonstration.
- Compliance: Your program meets WorkSafeBC Regulation 8.40(1) before students ever enter the workplace.
- Confidence: Students learn how to properly wear, maintain, and trust their respirator — skills that carry into their careers.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, I personally fit-tested more than 3,000 healthcare professionals, dental teams, and first responders across British Columbia. That same level of care and professionalism now goes into every classroom and workplace I serve.
